A large part of housework is cleaning – whether it’s polishing different surfaces, dusting appliances and objects in various rooms or washing clothes when doing laundry.
However, cleaning clothes isn’t always as simple as putting them in the washing machine. Sometimes garments are accidentally made dirty by food or makeup – and stain removal can be a tricky task. Thankfully though, tere are several methods for getting rid of stains using different solutions and products.
Tanya Mukendi is known for her cleaning and home hacks and has amassed 1.9 million followers on Instagram. She has also written the book Hack Your Home with easy tips and inspiration for cleaning, organising and improving your space.
In a recent Instagram post, the social media sensation turned her attention towards stains as she showed three methods to get rid of ketchup, makeup and oil stains from clothes.
It’s help the unsightly marks disappear ‚like magic‘ – and the best part is they are quick and easy to do. What’s more, the ingredients you need to use cost a matter of pennies.
The cleaning guru shared that she learnt these hacks from her „aunty who removes everything“. She captioned her Instagram reel: “Three stain hacks that actually work. Quick, weird, and surprisingly useful.”
Tanya then demonstrated each stain removal method – and you can read about them below…
1. Cold water and washing up liquid for ketchup stains
Starting off with ketchup, the cleaning expert squirted some of the condiment onto a white T-shirt and dabbed it down with kitchen roll. Then, she put cold water in a small bowl and added a drop of washing up liquid.
Once she made this mixture, she applied it to the stains with a round brush and threw the top into the washing machine with the rest of her white clothing. The result was a clean, stain-free white T-shirt.
2. Micellar water to remove makeup stains
Many beauty fans use micellar water to take their makeup off at the end of the day – but did you know you can use the products for clothes too?
Tanya has shown how the common beauty item can be used to remove makeup stains from your garments and towels. She started by brushing pink blusher onto a white towel to show an example of a makeup mark.
Next, she added some micellar water directly onto the stains. Next, you’ll need to use a brush to buff away the unsightly marks. After doing this, the blusher could no longer be seen on the towel.
3. Baking soda and washing up liquid for oil stains
Oil can make its way onto clothes while cooking, for example by hot oil splashes. So to combat this issue, Tanya demonstrated how she removes these stains from your clothing.
She poured a teaspoon of oil onto a grey top and began making her cleaning solution by combining baking soda and washing up liquid in a bowl.
The cleaning guru mixed these two ingredients together using a teaspoon and applied it to the oil stain, before using the back of the spoon to spread it out. To finish off the job, she put the clothing item into the washing machine.
Her Instagram post has garnered 124,000 views, more than 900 likes and dozens of comments. One user said: “Oh wow. Definitely trying these!”
Another added: “Ooohh brilliant to know.” Meanwhile, others described Tanya’s hacks as “terrific”, “great” and “fab“.
